WHAT IT’S ABOUT

Figuring out what comes next is hard enough without everyone asking you what comes next.

You don’t need to know exactly what you want to do with the rest of your life. You need a way to start figuring out what fits – and to give yourself permission to change your mind later.

You don’t have to figure out your whole life.

Choosing what comes next can feel like choosing what you’re going to do forever. It isn’t.

People change majors. They discover careers they didn’t know existed. They try something that sounded perfect and find out it isn’t. They develop new skills, change direction, and sometimes end up doing work they couldn’t have imagined when they were starting out.

So the goal isn’t to predict your entire future. It’s to understand yourself a little better: what you’re good at, what you enjoy, what matters to you, and where those things might lead.

You don’t need a lifetime plan. You just need a reasonable place to start.

Ask yourself these three questions...

  • What are you good at?

    Skills aren't always the things you get grades for. Think about what comes naturally to you, what you learn quickly, and what other people ask you to help them with.

  • What do you like?

    Think beyond favorite subjects and hobbies. What kinds of tasks, people, places, and ways of working leave you interested rather than counting the minutes until it's over?

  • What does society need?

    Somebody has to need the work you choose to do. Think about what kinds of work are needed, where opportunities are growing, and what people and organizations are willing to pay someone to do.
