WHAT IT’S ABOUT
Sometimes the question isn’t what you want to be when you grow up. You already grew up.
Can’t I Just Want Something More? A Career Guide for People Who Aren’t Starting from Scratch is for people who already have a job, a career, responsibilities, and a life, but have started wondering whether the work they’re doing is still the work they want to do.
Wanting something different doesn’t mean everything that came before was a mistake.
You’re not starting over. You’re starting from experience.
Changing direction in the middle of a working life is different from choosing a first career.
You already know things about yourself that you couldn’t have known when you started. You have skills, experience, responsibilities, preferences, connections, and probably a much clearer idea of what you don’t want.
The question isn’t how to erase what came before. It’s how to use what you’ve already built to help decide what comes next.
Start with what you already know…
-
What’s Working?
Not everything has to go. Look at the parts of your work you still enjoy, the things you’re good at, and the experience you’d be happy to carry into whatever comes next.
-
What Isn’t?
Pay attention to what leaves you frustrated, bored, exhausted, or wishing things were different. Knowing what you want to move away from can help clarify what you want to move toward.
-
What Could Change?
A different future doesn’t necessarily require blowing up your current life. Explore what could change, what would need to stay, and what realistic next steps might move you closer to something better.
It’s okay to want something more.
Can’t I Just Want Something More? helps you take stock of where you are, what you’ve learned, and what you might want next, without pretending you’re eighteen again or starting with a blank page.
