Can’t I Just Start Over? Educator Resource

One student. One question. One place to begin.

Students don’t always need another lecture about what they should be doing.

Sometimes they need a resource that meets them where they are, helps them understand their options, and gives them room to figure out what comes next.

 When to use this resource

For students who are struggling to move forward after a mistake, setback, conflict, failure, or period when things went off track.

Can’t I Just Start Over? helps students separate what they did from who they are while still taking responsibility for their choices.

Rather than treating accountability and self-compassion as opposites, the book helps students understand that they can acknowledge harm, make amends where appropriate, learn from what happened, and continue growing without turning one mistake into an identity.

The goal isn’t to erase the past.

It’s to help students decide what happens next.

 Students explore

  • Mistakes, Guilt & Shame
Recognizing the difference between regretting something they did and deciding that the mistake defines who they are.
  • Accountability Without Self-Destruction
Learning to own a mistake, understand its impact, and make changes without becoming trapped in shame.
  • Apologies & Repair
Exploring what a meaningful apology includes, how to make amends honestly, and why another person’s response cannot be controlled.
  • Self-Talk & the Inner Critic
Recognizing harsh internal narratives and practicing more accurate and constructive responses.
  • Interrupting Negative Spirals
Understanding how one setback can turn into avoidance, additional problems, or giving up, and identifying small opportunities to change direction.
  • Patterns & Triggers
Looking at what happens before repeated mistakes and identifying feelings, needs, pressures, or patterns that may be contributing.
  • Small Wins & Progress
Recognizing that meaningful change is often built through small, repeated actions rather than one dramatic turnaround.
  • Moving Forward
Accepting that the past cannot always be repaired or erased while learning that future choices can still be different.
